Sunlight and Inflammation: What’s the Connection?
Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury or illness, but chronic inflammation can lead to a host of health issues, including fatigue, joint pain, and even chronic disease. Research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that sunlight exposure triggers the release of nitric oxide in the skin, which helps to reduce blood pressure and inflammation throughout the body (Liu et al., 2014). Nitric oxide also helps to improve circulation, allowing oxygen and nutrients to reach tissues more effectively, which may further support the body’s natural healing processes.
Vitamin D: The Sunshine Vitamin
One of the most well-known benefits of sunlight is its ability to stimulate vitamin D production. When UV rays hit the skin, they trigger a chemical reaction that produces vitamin D3, which is then converted by the liver and kidneys into its active form. How Much Sunlight Do You Need?
Experts recommend 10–30 minutes of midday sunlight exposure several times per week, depending on your skin tone, location, and the time of year. Those with darker skin tones may require longer exposure to produce adequate vitamin D, while those living at higher latitudes may need to supplement during the winter months. As always, it’s important to balance sun exposure with sun safety — avoiding peak UV hours and applying sunscreen if you plan to be outside for extended periods.
